What is Cranskgiving?
Cranksgiving is a food drive on two wheels: part bike ride, part food drive, and part scavenger hunt. It’s been held annually in New York City since 1999. Every year, throughout the country, Cranksgiving events help provide thousands of needy families with a wealth of food during the week of Thanksgiving. Iowa City will once again be joining this national movement! This will be our 2nd year!
How does it work?
Bring your bike, a helmet, a bag, a lock, your internal GPS, and around $20 to buy food and/or other necessities. You’ll be provided with a manifest listing various items to buy from specific grocery stores around town, as well as some optional destinations of your choosing.
In lieu of this, we would like to encourage you, your family, and your friends to pick a day between Nov 1st and Nov. 21st (or our official day, Nov 7th) to create your own route and adventure.
Biking for a Good Cause
You can race or go at your own pace – it’s up to you! You can even just pick up all the items from one store (recommended due to the pandemic) or donate money directly to our charities. Do what you are most comfortable with!
If buying items, keep your receipt(s) as they will be needed to tally your monetary total. If you’d like, get out your own stopwatch or GPS and record your route and time. We’ll post the best times on the website as well as list our “Big Spenders”.
All of the donations collected during the event will go to CommUnity Food Bank and Table to Table in Iowa City.
Despite the pandemic, we hope you will ride and/or donate! This year will be difficult for many families, and because of you, we’ll be able to make it a happier Thanksgiving for many.
