When you register for the 4th Annual Hunger Banquet, you aren’t signing up to participate in “just another fundraiser.” The Hunger Banquet is designed to immerse guests in the reality of food insecurity in our community. More than 19,000 of our neighbors know food insecurity all too well. They know what it’s like to be hungry- really hungry. They know what it’s like to scrape together a meal to feed their children, then go to bed with an empty stomach themselves. They know how far they can stretch their paycheck, or what bills can be paid late. Thanks to the generosity of people like you, they know there’s somewhere they can turn for help.
CommUnity Food Bank is here for all Johnson County residents. Last year, CommUnity distributed a record-breaking 2,000,000 pounds of food to 4,583 households.
This year, to ensure the safety of our supporters in the face of COVID-19, CommUnity’s 4th Annual Hunger Banquet is going virtual! This means that you’ll be able to experience the Hunger Banquet from the comfort of your home, all while supporting CommUnity, learning about food insecurity, and now, supporting local restaurants.
Through an engaging virtual experience, participants will learn about the financial demographics of our neighbors in Johnson County in an interactive simulation. The event will also feature speakers from the community via video presentations. And like the in-person version of the Hunger Banquet, participants will be randomly assigned a financial demographic based on real income levels in Johnson County to determine the meal that they receive.
How will this work? We are partnering with local restaurants to provide gift cards that can be used to purchase your Hunger Banquet meal! The gift card that you receive will be based on your randomly assigned financial demographic. Some participants will be able to purchase a steak and lobster dinner, some will be able to purchase a salad, and those representing the percentage of our neighbors experiencing food insecurity will receive no meal at all.
All proceeds from this event are critical to the success of the Food Bank. Each year, the Hunger Banquet raises the financial resources to provide fresh produce and shelf-stable staples to more than 1,100 families each week for 6 months out of the year.
Registrants can expect an email with login credentials to be sent to thee-mail addresses provided during registration. A unique e-mail address is required for each participant who wants the chance to receive a gift card.
