Remember The Crisis Center’s #GivingTuesday campaign in November to raise $10,000 to buy a car for our Mobile Crisis Outreach team?
Well their wait just ended! Last week our counselors, Timothy and Rochelle (pictured center), picked up their Ford Fusion at Deery Brothers Ford Lincoln in Iowa City.
Because of our donors, they are now able to reach local clients at risk of suicide immediately and in-person, wherever they need it reducing unnecessary arrests and hospitalizations.
“Our counselors are now able to provide transportation when that is what’s needed to help someone in crisis. Just imagine if one of your family members was home alone, feeling overwhelmed and having thoughts of suicide. They needed to go stay in a safe place where others were present and able to help. In the past, we would have to call a cab which involves waiting, and introduces another stranger into an already emotionally overwhelming situation. Now we are able to drive that person ourselves, perhaps stop at the pharmacy to pick up a needed prescription or other items on the way. If the person is tearful or wanting to talk on the road, they can do so without having a cab driver overhearing it all. It may seem like a small thing, but It really makes a world of difference to say nothing of the cab fare it saves our agency (and donors).”
