The Financial Support Program (formerly Basic Needs) helps Johnson County individuals and families with basic necessities such as:
Rent and Utility Assistance
Security Deposit Assistance
Education and Work-Enabling Items
Clothing Vouchers
Bus Tickets & Gas Vouchers
Birth Certificates and Identification
Prescription Medication Assistance
Temporary Mailing Address
Funding for Financial Support is generously provided by individual donors, the Consultation of Religious Communities, the St. Anthony’s Bread fund, and other community partners.
Rent and Utility Assistance
Please call during business hours to schedule an appointment. The Financial Support staff will determine when to set an appointment based on when the bill is due. The Financial Support Program can help with money towards housing, water, and energy bills.
Eligibility:
Must live in Johnson County, Iowa, and need help paying a past due housing, water, or energy bill. Households can receive assistance for housing and utilities once per year. The Financial Support Program cannot help with late fees, phone bills, cable bills, insurance bills, taxes, vehicle repairs, or medical bills.

Applicants must attend a scheduled in-person interview to provide basic information about their household and sign a release form. For housing assistance, bring the statements you need help paying and your current lease or lender agreement. For utility assistance, bring the statement. If you have contacted other agencies for assistance with the same bill, please bring paperwork to show this.
Cultivating Careers
The Financial Support Program can help with education and work-enabling items such as job tools, laptops, uniform needs, and other items. Please provide a dated hire letter from your employer or verification of enrollment from your college.
Referrals:
Partner agencies are able to refer clients to our Cultivating Careers program by filling out the Cultivating Careers Referral Form and returning it to sara.barth@builtbycommunity.org.
Prescription Medication Assistance
First, apply for the Free Medical Clinic pharmacy program. If the Free Medical Clinic cannot help you, the Financial Support Program can assist once in a 12-month period for up to $100. Please provide a rejection note from the Free Medical Clinic along with your prescription and its cost at your pharmacy to Financial Support at 1121 S. Gilbert Ct., Iowa City during regular operating hours.
