The Disaster Distress Helpline is a 24/7, 365-day-a-year, national hotline dedicated to providing immediate crisis counseling for people who are experiencing emotional distress related to any natural or human-caused disaster.
Phone: Call 1-855-325-4296 and you’ll be connected to a trained crisis counselor in Iowa City, IA. They will listen, help you explore your feelings, work with you to create a safety plan if you think it would be helpful, and connect you with resources as needed.
Chat: Go to IowaCrisisChat.org and click “Chat Now.” (If you’re chatting between the hours of 2am-9am Central you will be redirected to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline crisis chat platform. This platform usually has a long wait. Please call 1-855-325-4296 for immediate help.) You will fill out a survey that helps us learn more about you and how you’re feeling. You will be connected with a trained crisis counselor in a private chat where they will listen, help you explore your feelings, work with you to create a safety plan if you think it would be helpful, and connect you with resources as needed. After you’ve completed the chat session, there is a follow-up survey that gives us important data to measure our counselors’ effectiveness.
Text: Text anything to 1-855-325-4296. From 9am-2am Central, a trained crisis counselor will text you back and listen, help you explore your feelings, work with you to create a safety plan if you think it would be helpful, and connect you with resources as needed. The crisis counselor is texting with you through our chat platform and not from a cell phone. If you text us between the hours of 2am-9am, you will receive a message with immediate resources. To receive immediate help during these hours, please call us at 1-855-325-4296 or text the national Crisis Text Line at 741-741.
